The reconstruction and transformation of the Youchou Building at the Tongji University campus in Shanghai is the final chapter of an experimental program for energy efficient buildings, demonstrating that eco-sustainability can also be an important opportunity in the architectural redevelopment of existing buildings. The project stems from the desire to build a prototype; a replicable model responding to the urgent need for energy consumption reduction through the renovation of buildings with insulating materials and the creation of new facades. The main objective was to improve the building, a smooth brick parallelepiped with internal concrete walls, both from a functional and technical point of view. The project focuses on the new specifications necessary for the creation of educational spaces, research laboratories, study areas and common areas dedicated to exhibitions and recreational activities, located on the first floor and at roof level. From an architectural point of view, the solution chosen for the design of the facade is the element that characterizes the entire structure: upon its realization, the building itself gives the illusion of a block draped in fabric. This effect was created by modelling specific formworks to produce fibreglass-reinforced concrete (GRC) panels in a dark green, almost black color to provide a shimmering effect capable of creating a dialogue with the adjacent park. LED lighting systems and solar panels were positioned on the roof, which also act as gazebos to create shaded areas, and increase the building’s energy-saving capacity.
